“Traditions, traditions. Without our traditions our lives would be as shaky as, as… as a fiddler on the roof!”
– Fiddler on the Roof
As the Toy Vey team quietly began testing out the Maccabee magic on friends, family and other members of the faith, they were thrilled by the overwhelmingly positive feedback. Children loved it and parents did as well. The ways these unique families chose to create their own Maccabee traditions were as different and diverse as the families themselves. Here are some suggestions and ideas that came from their cool and creative “test market.”
Light the Menorah (the Hanukkiah) with your Maccabee! He can recite the prayers
with you, sing the prayers, and while he probably shouldn’t light the match himself,
he can at least assist with the Shamash.
Whereas some Maccabees hide by themselves, other Maccabees are parent operated,
with Mom and Dad hiding the Maccabee. This is cool because it allows for a real
battle of the brains between parent and child, just like with the afekoman at Passover
the kids doing their very best to find where Mom and/or Dad has set the Maccabee. Hide the Maccabee in the morning and allow the children to find him before bedtime,
and then let the little one sleep all safe and sound with their soldier by their side.
After all, it’s not like the Maccabee has to travel anywhere at night
...unless you want him to, of course.
Some Maccabees are “magical” and they go off by themselves to hide
every night (do they fly, do they walk – who knows?)and every morning
it is up to the children of the house to discover where their Maccabee
has landed. Some of these hiding places can get pretty crazy and Maccabees
have been known to have a raging good time in the middle of the night:
building a Temple out of Legoor borrowing Barbie’s dream car to
go for a spin to the kosher bakery.

Dreidel with the Maccabee! Sometimes the sweetest traditions are the oldest ones.
Play Dreidel as a family, just like you used to do with yours, but make it even more
cool for the kiddos by giving the Maccabee his own gelt to put into the
pot in the middle.
